Problem description:

Brooktrout TRxStream card family (TR10xx) driver uses Brooktrout SDK 4.0.0 from Faxchange version 6.6.02. If you are performing new clean Faxchange installation, it is enough to install low-level card driver and no other actions are necessary.

But if you want to upgrade existing installation with Brooktrout TR10xx card, you must follow exact sequence to make new driver working correctly.

Solution:

Stop all Faxchange services.

Discover current driver version

• Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager
• Select "TRxStream board" device in "Brooktrout hardware" group
• Menu Action -> Properties -> Driver tab
• Driver version must be 5.0.0.0

If version is lower or driver doesn't work correctly (there is an exclamation sign next to the device icon in Device Manager), you must reinstall driver using following procedure.

Removing old version of software and card driver

• Software removal (if instaled):
  • Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs
  • Remove "Brooktrout System Software"
• Driver removal:
  • Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager
  • Select "TRxStream board" device in "Brooktrout hardware" group
  • Menu Action -> Uninstall
• Removing of other items (important - if you do not perform this operation, new driver and software installation can be wrong):
  • Delete "C:\Brooktrout\Boston\" folder including content
  • In "C:\Windows\System32" folder delete "brktBdevco.dll" and "brktBdevpp.dll" files
  • In "C:\Windows\System32\drivers" folder delete "boston.sys" file
  • Using registry editor delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Brooktrout Technology" key
  • Using registry editor delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Brooktrout Technology" key

Installation of card PnP driver

• Copy content of "<CD UMS>\Support\Brooktrout\TRxStream\Driver\" folder into "C:\Brooktrout\Boston\pnp\".
• Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager
• Select device (at this time unknown with question mark icon)
• Menu Action -> Update driver
• "Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for software?" -> "No"
• "What do you want the wizard to do?" -> "Install from a list or specific location"
• "Include this location in the search: C:\Brooktrout\Boston\pnp"
• "Do you really want to install the driver?" -> Yes
• "Do you want to install the software now?" -> No

Further information:

Optionally you can perform following steps, but it is not necesary - setup of Faxchange is able to do them.

System software installation

• Run "<CD UMS>:\Support\Brooktrout\TRxStream\Software\boston.msi
  • Noninteractive installation: "boston.msi /passive"
  • Installation into different folder "boston.msi INSTALLDIR=D:\Brooktrout\Boston\" (default folder is "C:\Brooktrout\Boston\").

Creating config files

• Run "C:\Brooktrout\Boston\bin\configtool.exe --nopreferences".
• If device driver is correctly installed, config tool should recognize your card automatically.
